Did you know? Gratitude can make people prefer sweet foods

In a fun study from 2015, researchers found that gratitude causes individuals to prefer sweeter foods! According to researchers, this is because they the experience leading to gratitude makes people infer that they must be deserving of sweetness.

“Grateful individuals feel more deserving of kindness [and] sweetness, which in turn causes them to be more inclined to eat sweets.” Additionally, researchers highlighted the association of sweet metaphors used to describe a kind action or person. ‘Sweetheart’ and ‘honey’ are two cited examples of this type of word association. 

Like the sweet metaphors, our feeling of gratefulness may incline us to choose foods with the same word association. According to researchers, feeling grateful can actually decrease preferences for sour, bitter or salty foods.
